Fashion Favorites From the 2019 Golden Globes

I love an awards show. (Awards show? Award show? I’m not entirely sure which one is correct.)

But I do. I love an awards show. Never mind that I’ve only seen one movie in the last two years and that I don’t watch much television anymore. I love the pomp and circumstance, the speeches and jokes, and especially the red carpet interviews and the fashion. (A full list of the winners is here!)

As mentioned in my Oscars post last year, I’m not into a lot of negativity. There were certainly people last night who I felt missed the mark, but I’m not sharing that here. There’s enough of that in the world. Instead, I’m just doling out the gold stars today. Without further ado, here are my top ten ladies in no particular order.

Molly Sims

This dress is so interesting and fun. You don’t see many prints like this on the red carpet. I wish her make-up was a little less severe but I also just had to ask a Sephora employee how to use concealer, so who am I to judge? I would wear this in a heartbeat.

Felicity Huffman

I’m not convinced Felicity Huffman is aging like the rest of us. I truly can’t think of a single awards show where she hasn’t looked absolutely stunning.

Regina King in Alberta Ferretti

Regina King is a goddess. And even though the silhouette of this dress is what you see on many, the color and texture feel special.

Melissa McCarthy

I think this dress is awesome on Melissa. Purple is a beautiful color on her and the belt tied on an angle is interesting and really flattering. I saw this turn up on a few worst-dressed lists, but I don’t understand.

Taraji P. Henson in Vera Wang

I mean, come on. No one wears a dress like Taraji P. Henson.

Camilla Belle

I’m not sure I’ve heard much about Camilla Belle since she dated Joe Jonas a million years ago, but that’s a comment on my level of awareness, not her acting choices. I always thought she was stunningly beautiful though and I L-O-V-E this dress. Navy blue is one of my very favorite colors and this dress is so striking on her. I feel like the bright eye makeup shouldn’t work in theory, but I dig that too.

Sandra Oh

Sandra Oh looked fabulous the entire night. Her red dress from the show opening has gotten a lot of attention, but I particularly like how different this dress is. On it’s own, I don’t love her hair, but with this dress it feels like a natural choice to balance out the asymmetry.

Thandie Newton

Holy moly, I love this dress. It’s tailored to perfection and shiny without being over-the-top. I love that she wore it sans jewelry too (but that’s the minimalist in me talking).

Kristen Bell in Zuhair Murad

This is the kind of dress I wish I could wear. Kristen Bell looks so chic. I think I also like it because I like her (and her husband and his podcast) and I like that she Instagrammed a photo of her stuffing her face the morning before the show.

Patricia Clarkson in Georges Chakra Couture

Ephemeral AND interesting. Often, ephemeral is used for something fluffy, delicate and pastel, but somehow this is like ephemeral fire and I’m good with it.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a few of the dudes who looked great too. I love that many men are selecting options beyond the traditional black tux.

John Krasinski

First, Emily Blunt is amazing, too. The only reason she’s not on my list up top is because I’m not super into the handkerchief-style hemline. Second, there were a bunch of dudes rocking the navy blue tux, but John Krasinski is here because we’re currently binge-watching The Office and I’m reminded of how deeply I adore him. The tie feels a smidge droopy, but that could just be at this particular moment. Regardless, I’ve probably stared at this photo more often than a happily married woman should.

(Husband, I still love you best. And if we ever go to a formal event, let’s get you a navy tux.)

Darren Criss in Dior

I saw one media outlet referring to this jacket as an Ikea curtain. I disagree and I love it. The tailoring is spot-on and the print suits him.

Stephan James in Ralph Lauren

Velvet tuxes + bold shoes + interesting lapel pin = yes.

Ryan Seacrest

Again with the velvet, yeah. Again with the non-black jacket, yeah.

Timothée Chalamet in Louis Vuitton by Virgil Abloh

It’s safe to say that people were divided on this sparkly harness-like thing he wore. I’m firmly pro-harness. I can’t really think of anyone else who could pull this off right now; it wouldn’t look right on say Andy Samberg or Sterling K. Brown. But with his age, build and avant-garde preferences, it feels pitch-perfect.

That’s it! What did you think of the Golden Globes this year?

All in all, I enjoyed the show. I don’t think I’ll remember much of it—nothing particularly newsy happened aside from a few upsets in various categories—but it was an enjoyable night in front of the television, sipping my rosé and ogling all the beautiful people.
