My Two Cents

My Two Cents – March 12, 2018

This is my first “My Two Cents” post, primarily because up until now, I’ve had preplanned posts. What I’ve found, however, is that on Mondays, my brain is spinning with thoughts and sometimes, it might be nice to just blast them all out into a post to clear my brain.

I think some people do this on paper when they first wake up in the morning (see: The Skinny Confidential). Until my son starts sleeping better overnight and ideally sleeping past 6 a.m., my mornings at home are chaos. Things don’t calm down until I’m at my desk with my computer and my coffee.

This weekend was a good one. We celebrated my son’s first birthday with about 30 friends and family members. He seemed to have a good time being passed from one set of arms to the next, and he absolutely crushed his cake. I think at one point a sugar coma kicked in because he literally leaned forward and rested his head on the cake. He had to take a quick party break after that for a bath. It was great having so many people we love in one place. If I can edit my photos to make them look decent (photography novice here), I’ll post a few!

I spent most of yesterday cleaning up from the party and puttering around the house, tidying here and straightening there. I also got in some good one-on-one time with my daughter. We played a little PlayDoh, read lots of books and talked for awhile too. She is almost 4 1/2 years old and I can’t get over how much she has to say. I love seeing how she’s starting to put things together and draw her own conclusions about what’s going on around her. I am so proud of the person she’s becoming, and though I’m not wishing away the years, I’m excited to see our son growing up too.

Since we had no real plans yesterday, I found myself with some unstructured time. I don’t always do well with this. The list of things I want to do is usually pretty long, and then when I actually get time to myself, I don’t know where to begin. Do I read one of the 12 books sitting on my dresser? Do I spend some time trying to turn this blog into what I envision? Do I try to unpack some of the boxes that have been sitting in our basement since we moved a year ago? Or do I spend the time with my family, who I love more than anything? They are always my #1 priority, but I recognize that sometimes other things have to happen too. Anyway, I ended up with decision paralysis and tried to do too many things at once, thereby accomplishing basically nothing. Even though I’m very organized and a total planner, these little pockets of time always throw me for a loop.

This week marks the start of the NCAA tournament. This is a big deal in our house. I wasn’t always a basketball fan (or a sports fan!) but my husband is and in an effort to connect with him over something he loves, I decided to learn about the game. I picked a team to root for – Rock Chalk Jayhawk! more on why I picked them another time – and now we take off work the first two days of the tournament to watch 12 hours of basketball each day. We fill out bunches of brackets and our daughter gets in on it too. I’m so excited for a short work week and a few extra days at home with my best ones.

Happy Monday to you and yours. May your coffee be strong and your to-do list be short!
