My Two Cents

Fold in the Cheese, David

This post is #10 in my September Writing Project. Details are here.

Prompt: Talk about your favorite fictional characters.

A well-read person would undoubtedly fill this blog post with their love for Atticus Finch or Jay Gatsby. Alas, I am not that well-read, as likely evidenced by my list of favorite books. I love love love to read, but wouldn’t say I’ve spent considerable time with the classics.

Nope, today I’m going to write about my favorite on-screen characters. Write what you know, yeah?

Miranda Hobbes – Sex and the City

Am I a Miranda? Or do I just desperately WANT to be a Miranda? I believe she was the smartest, funniest character in the series. She was whip-smart, focused, and although it took time for her to accept her new roles, she turned out to be a good mother and wife too. Miranda was far from perfect, but I want to be like her nonetheless.

“It feels good to be sarcastic.”

David Rose – Schitt’s Creek

I can’t shut up about this show and I can’t shut up about David Rose. He is a genius creation. Sarcastic, snobby and awkward in the beginning, he starts to show his soft side as the show progresses and it’s so endearing (and also still awkward.) His facial expressions are everything. Google “David Rose face” and enjoy. Having his dad’s eyebrows helps.

Fun fact: my husband and I like to teach the kids random lines from shows we love. In the last 30 minutes, my daughter has said “ew David,” “fold in the cheese,” and “my best to Bob Cratchit.” I am so proud and if you’ve watched Schitt’s Creek, you understand all of these.

“I have never heard someone say so many wrong things, one after the other, consecutively, in a row.”

Leslie Knope – Parks & Recreation

She’s another go-getter – like Miranda Hobbes without the edge. Eternal optimist. Gets shit done and gets to marry Ben, so that’s win-win right there. She is indefatigable and I admire that.

What I hear when I’m being yelled at is people caring really loudly at me.”

Titus Andromedon – Unbrekable Kimmy Schmidt

Has there ever been a more extra character than Titus Andromedon? Seriously, look at the Wikipedia page for Titus Andromedon. If you can make it to the “Peeno Noir” reference without quietly wondering if you’re on an acid trip, I’m impressed. He’s beyond anything else I’ve ever seen on tv (and I watch a fair amount of tv).

“Cyborg Cher, she’s a Cher made of metal… but with Cher’s real face!”

Ron Swanson – Parks & Recreation

Manliest of men. His apathy toward work was hilarious and his love for his friends was endearing.

It’s almost impossible to choose one Ron Swanson quote because everything is he says is quotable. We’ll go with one that pays homage to one of my favorite foods.

“Dear frozen yogurt, you are the celery of desserts. Be ice cream or be nothing.”
