My Two Cents

My Favorite Movies

This post is #17 in my September Writing Project. Details are here.

Prompt: Share your favorite movies.

Well, it happened. I fell behind. I went to type this post up on Wednesday and my brain just couldn’t make words anymore. I recently took on a new project at work and accepted a freelance job that’s in the research stage. My brain was fed up and it burned out on me. Trying to do 30 posts in 30 days is no joke. I’m hoping I can make up lost ground at some point and still wrap this on the 30th, but if I don’t, I guess that’s ok.

Now on to my favorite movies.

But… I don’t have many. I’m not really a movie person.

I like a lot of older movies. I grew up in a house where Turner Classic Movies and AMC got a LOT of air time. The dulcet tones of John Wayne echo in many of my memories. I assumed all kids grew up watching Fred Astaire and Ann Miller tapping across their screens. Both of my parents loved movies… although when I think back on those films, I feel like I should say they loved the cinema. Something about calling it cinema feels more refined.

My all-time favorite movie is Some Like It Hot. Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe dressing up, having fun, running around—I love all of it. I also love Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Easter Parade. I can appreciate a dramatic film, but the truth is I usually prefer light and frothy entertainment. I love White Christmas too. My holiday season is not complete if I haven’t watched it at least once.

Now moving out of the realm of refinement and nostalgia, I’ll also share that I love the move Step Brothers with a ferocity that this movie really doesn’t warrant. While on our honeymoon, my husband and I watched this for the first time. It was around 9:00 a.m. on our fourth or fifth day in Jamaica. The sun was shining. And we decided to lay around our bungalow and watch Step Brothers instead of going to the beach. Watching Step Brothers turned into our annual anniversary ritual. We constantly say things like “Know what’s good  for a hurt shoulder?” and “It’s the f—king Catalina Wine Mixer” and “Did you touch my drum set?”

Other movies I enjoy: Wedding Crashers. The Hangover. Casino Royale. The Princess and the Frog. Frozen. Tangled. Up. Toy Story. Coco. Moana. Ok, you see where this is going.

If I’m going to give two hours of my life to a screen, I want it to make me smile.
